A More Sustainable Choice
A More Sustainable Choice
Choosing antique and reclaimed furniture is one of the most sustainable ways to furnish a home.
Older furniture was often built using solid timber and traditional craftsmanship designed to last for generations, rather than a few years.
By giving these pieces a new home, you help reduce demand for mass-produced furniture while keeping beautiful, characterful items in circulation for years to come.

Description
Crafted from solid beech with a rich, dark patina, this plane is a classic example of Victorian-era hand tools. The block is stamped with the name "G. HAWLEY", likely the original owner or a local toolmaker. The side also features further historic stamps, including "00," which would have denoted the specific size or profile of the cut.
This tool was an essential part of a carpenter's kit, used by hand to shape the intricate decorative trim found in period homes. It retains its original metal blade and wooden wedge, showcasing the durability of traditional British toolmaking. Its heavy weight and weathered surface tell the story of a lifetime of work in a busy workshop.
Condition
The plane is in original antique condition with significant signs of age and functional use:
-
The Body: The wood shows heavy scuffing, historic scratches, and surface wear, consistent with its age and use. There are minor losses to the wood on the corners and edges (see detail photos).
-
The Blade & Wedge: The original metal blade and wooden wedge are present and secure. The metal shows a dark, oxidized patina but remains intact.
-
Markings: The stamps for "G. HAWLEY" and "00" remain visible and clear.
-
Build: Structurally very sound and solid.
